By Ezekiel Kagbala
The riverside community of the Ayakoromo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta state was transformed into a vibrant cascade of emotions, culture, and dignified celebration as family, friends, and distinguished personalities gathered to honour the life of Late Pa Captain Williams Elaweremi, father-in-law of High Chief Engr. Kestin Pondi, the Managing Director of Tantita Security Services Ltd.
The ceremony farewell featured a moving service of songs earlier in the week and the main burial ceremony on Friday, December 5 became one of the most memorable gatherings in the community’s recent history, drawing a massive crowd from within Delta State and beyond.
For days leading up to the ceremony, Ayakoromo was “agog,” alive with activity, anticipation, and the unmistakable spirit that accompanies the passage of a beloved patriarch.
Residents, extended family members, church groups, traditional troupes, and well-wishers worked together to create a befitting send-off for a man remembered for his discipline, generosity, and strong moral values.
Late Pa Captain Elaweremi, deeply respected in his community, left behind a legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to family. His passing drew not only those who knew him personally, but also admirers who had felt the impact of his contributions over the years.
The solemn journey to his final resting place began at the Safe Haven Mortuary in Warri, where his remains were released into a carefully coordinated motorcade. In a symbolic tribute reflecting both tradition and respect, the body was transported via barge across the riverine routes to Ayakoromo, capturing a powerful moment of homecoming.
The river procession quiet, respectful, and deeply moving reminded many of the intimate connection between the people of the Niger Delta and their waterways. It was both a reflection of his origins and a final salute from the riverine communities he loved.
The burial ceremony also became a convergence point for some of the region’s most influential figures. Notable among them was Sheriff Oborevwori Jr., the son of the Governor of Delta State, alongside political leaders, business moguls, traditional rulers, and top executives.
Their presence underscored the respect commanded not only by the deceased but also by his son-in-law, High Chief Engr. Kestin Pondi, whose leadership in security, community engagement, and regional development has made him a prominent voice in the Niger Delta.
Guests praised the family for honouring Pa Elaweremi with a ceremony that reflected both cultural pride and modern elegance.
From the colorful displays by cultural groups to the heartfelt tributes delivered by family and clergy, the burial ceremony captured the essence of a life well-lived. The service of songs earlier in the week set the emotional foundation, as hymns, sermons, and testimonies highlighted the deceased’s humility and unwavering faith.
On the day of the funeral, the atmosphere was a blend of mourning and celebration — sorrow for the loss, yet gratitude for a life that touched many.
The community field, transformed into a large ceremonial space, witnessed: Traditional performances expressing reverence and farewell Choir renditions that moved guests to tears, Tributes from community leaders and family. A reception that brought people together in fellowship and leading into a final resting place befitting His legacy. As the sun dipped over Ayakoromo’s rivers, Pa Captain Williams Elaweremi was finally laid to rest amid prayers, cultural rites, and solemn reflections. For many in attendance, it was not merely a burial but a powerful reminder of the enduring values he embodied.
High Chief Engr. Kestin Pondi, visibly moved, expressed gratitude to guests who travelled from far and near. He described his father-in-law as “a man who lived with honour, discipline, and a heart of service.”
The ceremony closed with blessings and goodwill messages, marking the end of an era but not the end of the legacy. In the end, the grand burial of Late Pa Captain Williams Elaweremi became more than a family event it became a moment of unity, cultural pride, and community reflection. Ayakoromo will long remember the days when thousands gathered, dignitaries arrived in droves, and an entire community paused to honour the life of a man who left his mark on the hearts of many.
