Economic Activities Grounded in N-Delta as NDYC Writes Tinubu Over Effurun-Sapele-Benin Failed Road

By Ezekiel Kagbala
The Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, wade into the failed condition of the Warri-Sapele-Benin highway noting that "the dilapidated road has severely impacted on the failure of many local businesses and the broader economy as trucks transporting goods are left stranded while many are involved in accidents due to the road's poor state".
This was contained in an open letter to President Tinubu, signed by the group's leader, Comrade Bene Youkore Mamamu, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri, Delta State on Sunday.
While hinting that the Warri-Sapele-Benin road and the Benin-Sapele express road "serve as a vital corridor for trade and commerce, linking States and facilitating the movement of goods across the region", the group appealed to the President to "order immediate repairs of the deteriorating condition of the road, which is a critical artery for economic activities in the Niger Delta region".
According to the letter, "the failed road is crucial for the transportation of agricultural products, manufactured goods, and other essential supplies required in the South South".
"However, the daily sight of trucks toppling over on the failed portions of the road is a stark reminder of the urgent need for intervention. We are alarmed by the potential for catastrophic accidents, including explosions that could claim lives and devastate families", the group stated.
The group's open letter to President Tinubu partly reads, "We, the members of the Niger Delta Youth Council, write to you with a deep sense of urgency and concern regarding the deplorable state of the Effurun-Sapele-Benin road and the Benin-Sapele expressway.
"As a council representing the youths of the Niger Delta region, we feel compelled to bring this pressing issue to your attention, as it significantly impacts our livelihoods and safety.
"The current condition of these vital roadways is not only a hindrance to economic activities but also poses a grave risk to the lives of our people. The roads are riddled with potholes and other hazards that make them perilous for all users, particularly for the petrol tankers and LPG gas trucks that frequently traverse these routes. We are alarmed by the potential for catastrophic accidents, including explosions that could claim lives and devastate families. The sight of trucks toppling over on these failed portions of the road is a stark reminder of the urgent need for intervention.
"We are hopeful that your administration will take swift action to address this critical issue. The youth of the Niger Delta are eager to contribute to the nation"
The NDYC reiterated the urgent need for the Federal Government's intervention to fast track the rehabilitation of the road arguing that "delay is dwindling the economic prosperity of the Niger Delta region".
