Group Condemns False 'Late' Reference to Chief Wellington Okirika, Urges Security Agencies to Investigate Alleged Threats
By Ezekiel Kagbala
The Association of Helping Hands Elites for Peace and Sustainable Development has strongly condemned the false reference to Chief (Dr.) Wellington O. Okirika, CON, the Bolowei and Traditional Prime Minister of Gbaramatu Kingdom, as "late" in a social media publication, describing the statement as reckless, misleading, and capable of inciting unnecessary tension in the Niger Delta.
In a statement signed by Dr. Richard O. Ayiwe (CCFE), Chairman of the Association of Helping Hands Elites for Peace and Sustainable Development, the group expressed outrage over what it described as a deliberate act of misinformation allegedly circulated by social media commentator Yemi Otuedon.
The association called on Itsekiri leaders to prevail on individuals making inflammatory and provocative statements capable of disrupting the existing peace and harmonious relationship among ethnic nationalities in the Warri area and the Niger Delta.
According to the statement, Chief Wellington O. Okirika remains alive and continues to play a significant role in the development of the Niger Delta. The group noted that he is widely recognized for his contributions to the struggle that led to the implementation of the 13% derivation principle, earning him the title "Mr. 13% Derivation Fund."
The association stated that Nigerians, particularly the people of the Niger Delta, should honour and respect Chief Okirika for his sacrifices and leadership rather than allow false narratives intended to tarnish his image.
It further expressed concern over what it described as alleged plots by "bad elements" to harm the elder statesman, calling on federal, state, and local security agencies to immediately investigate the matter and apprehend anyone found to be involved in any criminal conspiracy.
The group warned that any attack on a respected Niger Delta leader could threaten peace and stability in the region, with possible consequences for Nigeria's economy, which depends significantly on oil and gas production.
While emphasizing its commitment to peace, the association urged security agencies to act swiftly to forestall any breakdown of law and order and ensure that those responsible for spreading false information or allegedly plotting violence are brought to justice.
The statement concluded with prayers for the peace and unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the continued progress of Delta State, and good health and long life for Chief (Dr.) Wellington O. Okirika, CON.
