The Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at a clinic in London at the age of 82.

In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, Chief Comrade Bene Mamamau, the president of the council, described Buhari's death as a monumental loss to Nigeria, emphasizing that the history of Nigeria's leadership would be incomplete without acknowledging his contributions.

"Though the expectations of Nigerians from Buhari were high during his time as president, his tenure was marked by significant challenges and achievements that shaped the nation," Mamamau stated.

"His commitment to fighting corruption, improving security, and fostering economic growth will be remembered, even as we acknowledge the complexities of his administration."

The NDYC highlighted Buhari's efforts in promoting peace and stability in the Niger Delta region, noting that his administration made strides in addressing the long-standing issues of youth unemployment and environmental degradation. "While there were criticisms and unmet expectations, we must recognize the efforts made towards dialogue and development in our region," Mamamau added.

The council called on Nigerian youth to honor Buhari's legacy by continuing to engage in constructive dialogue and advocacy for the betterment of the nation. "As we mourn his passing, let us also reflect on the lessons learned during his leadership and strive to build a Nigeria that reflects the hopes and aspirations of all its citizens," the statement concluded.

Tributes have poured in from various sectors of society, with many acknowledging Buhari's role in Nigeria's political landscape over the decades. As the nation grapples with the loss of a significant figure, the NDYC urged unity and resilience among Nigerians, emphasizing the need to work together towards a brighter future.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria's president from 2015 until 2023, was a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army and previously held the position of military ruler from 1983 to 1985. His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics, leaving behind a complex legacy that will be debated for years to come.
