Ijaw Journalists Association Worldwide  Unveiled, To Propel Ijaw Development and Advancement

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the representation and development of the Ijaw people, media professionals have officially launched the Ijaw Journalists Association World-wide (IJAW). In a statement by the National President , Comrade Bulou Kosin and Secretary, Comrade Ezekiel Kagbala, copies of which were made available to newsmen in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State, the group disclosed that the initiative is aimed at bringing together journalists, media practitioners, and stakeholders from various sectors.

Kosin, further emphasized the association's commitment to canvass for the development and advancement of the Ijaw Nationality through responsible journalism and writings. "The Ijaw Journalists Association is not just a platform for journalists; it is a movement dedicated to the progress of our people. We aim to amplify the voices of the Ijaws, highlight our challenges, and celebrate our achievements," Kosin stated during his address.

Kosin outlined the criteria for membership, stating that to join the I. J. A. W, individuals must be trained and practicing journalists affiliated to a recognized media outfit and must also be active members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ). This requirement underscores the association's commitment to maintaining professional standards and ensuring that its members are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to the media landscape.

The birth of the I. J. A. W comes at a crucial time when the Ijaw community faces the need for action on various socio-economic challenges related to resource ownership, democracy, environmental degradation, education, healthcare and others. The association aims to serve as a platform for advocacy, providing a voice for the Ijaw people and fostering dialogue on critical issues affecting the region.

In his remarks, Kosin highlighted the importance of collaboration among journalists to promote the Ijaw narrative. "We must work together to tell our stories authentically and to challenge the stereotypes that often misrepresent us. The I. J. A. W will serve as a unifying force for Ijaw journalists, enabling us to share resources, knowledge, and support," he stressed.
