Organization for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian Condemns Assault on NYSC Member in Anambra

The Organization for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian (OHPRPH) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent assault on Edema Elohor Jennifer, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), by armed operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Comrade Ezekiel Kagbala, President of OHPRPH, expressed outrage over the incident, describing the attack as "animalistic conduct" that undermines the safety and dignity of young Nigerians serving their country. The organization called for immediate action against those responsible for the assault, urging law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators and ensure they face justice.

"The attack on Edema Elohor Jennifer is not just an assault on an individual; it is an attack on the very fabric of our society and the principles of service and sacrifice that the NYSC embodies," Kagbala stated. "We cannot allow such acts of violence to go unpunished. Those who engage in such barbaric behavior must be held accountable."

Kagbala emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the operations of vigilante groups across the country, advocating for better training and oversight to prevent future incidents of violence. "Vigilante groups should complement law enforcement, not replace it. We must ensure that they operate under strict guidelines that prioritize human rights and the rule of law," he added.

"It is unacceptable that the Anambra state Police Command would suggest that the lack of cooperation from the victim is a valid reason to excuse the inaction against those responsible for such heinous acts.

"This line of reasoning not only undermines the gravity of the crime but also sends a dangerous message that victims bear the burden of proof in cases of assault and dehumanization.

"The police must recognize that their primary duty is to protect citizens and uphold the law, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a victim's participation in the investigation.

"The failure to act decisively in the face of brutality only perpetuates a culture of impunity, where perpetrators feel emboldened to commit further acts of violence without fear of repercussions.

"For the Main time, OHPRPH is calling on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to withdraws corps members from Anambra State".
