By Ezekiel Kagbala
A prominent Niger Delta activist, Comrade Doboro Marvelous has called on the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently reform and revitalize local government operations in Delta State.
In a statement he personally signed, copies of which were made available to newsmen in Asaba on Friday, Doboro specifically urged Governor Oborevwori to "implement strategies that not only enhance the functionality of local governments but also empower citizens economically".
Doboro, writing under the platform of the Organization for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian, emphasized "the need for a collaborative and multi-faceted approach to governance".
In this regard, he suggested that "the State Government should invest in skill acquisition programmes, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and create job opportunities that can uplift the local economy".
"As a concerned citizen and a member of the Organization for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian, I write to you today to address a pressing issue that affects the lives of countless residents in Delta State: the performance of local government chairmen in fulfilling their constitutional duties as outlined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria", Diboro said.
He stated further, "Local governments are the closest tier of government to the people, and they play a crucial role in the delivery of essential services and amenities that directly impact the quality of life of our citizens and should be seen carrying out their duties of Developing, Maintaining roads, markets and public spaces to enhance the living conditions of residents.
"Unfortunately, many local government chairmen have fallen short of these responsibilities, leading to a growing sense of disillusionment among the populace. The lack of basic amenities has resulted in increased poverty, health challenges, and a decline in the overall standard of living in our communities.
"In light of this situation, I respectfully urge your esteemed office to take decisive action by directing local government chairmen in Delta State to prioritize their constitutional duties. This can be achieved through collaboration with the Organisation for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian to for Regular Monitoring and Evaluation".
