The cultural heartbeat of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State recently witnessed a moment of profound historical and cultural significance with the installation of High Chief Kestin Pondi as the Owena of Ozoro Kingdom.

The installation adds another layer to the rich tapestry of Ozoro Kingdom’s history. At a time when traditional institutions continue to play a stabilising role in society, the emergence of leaders who command respect both in cultural and modern spheres is widely viewed as a positive and reassuring development.

The colourful traditional ceremony, held in Ozoro Town on Saturday, was presided over by His Royal Majesty, Barrister Anthony Uvietobore Ogbogbo Ibuka I, the Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom. Amid chants, rites and age-long customs, High Chief Pondi was formally ushered into the revered circle of traditional leadership, marking a new chapter in the kingdom’s evolving heritage.

The title of Owena is one of deep cultural relevance within Ozoro Kingdom, historically associated with leadership, responsibility and service to the people. Bestowing the title on High Chief Kestin Pondi reflects not only royal confidence but also recognition of his contributions to community development, leadership and societal stability.

Traditional chiefs, elders, youths and well-wishers from within and outside the kingdom gathered to witness the historic event, underscoring the enduring importance of traditional rulership in preserving identity, unity and moral authority among the people.

Beyond the throne, High Chief Kestin Pondi is widely known as the Managing Director of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, an indigenous security firm playing a critical role in the protection of national assets, particularly in the Niger Delta region. His leadership in the private sector, characterised by strategic thinking and grassroots engagement, has earned him respect across communities and institutions.

Observers say his installation as Owena bridges modern leadership with traditional values, reinforcing the relevance of indigenous institutions in contemporary governance, peacebuilding and development efforts.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom emphasised the importance of integrity, loyalty and selfless service to the people, noting that the selection of High Chief Pondi aligns with the kingdom’s vision of strengthening unity and promoting sustainable progress.

Community members expressed optimism that the new Owena will serve as a strong link between the palace, the people and external stakeholders, particularly in areas of youth empowerment, peacebuilding and development advocacy.
