World Environment Day 2025: CEPEJ, UDU LGA Embark on Tree Planting Campaign, Kick Against Deforestation

Worried about the negative impact of climate change on the society, an environmental advocacy group, Center For Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ and the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, Hon. Vincent Oyibode on Thursday, canvassed for tree planting among residents of the Council area to protect the environment from deforestation.

The event which was organized to create awareness on environmental sustainability and self preservation featured the planting of economic trees including coconut palm and oranges, among others.

The Chairman of UDU LGA emphasized the importance of trees noting that "they provide the needed oxygen for healthy living and checkmate air pollution". 

According to him, "the Local Government Council solemnly kicks against deforestation in view of the negative impacts of the ocean layers and climate change".

Oyibode, represented by the Vice Chairman of the Local Government Council, Mrs. Onajite Oputu, spoke while inaugurating tree planting awareness campaign in the Council Area as part of activities marking the 2025 World Environment Day.

He said, "The economic letdown brought on us as a result of deforestation is unquantifiable. 

"Consequently, afforestation is our main objective in Udu Local Government Area. We encourage tree planting among residents to enable them live good life.

"Recently, the Local Government organized a workshop on environmental sanitation and encouraging the residents on tree planting as well as keeping the environment clean.

"We are hereby calling on our people to keep their environment clean, do proper waste management, plant trees around their abode and make lives around them better".

Also speaking on the occasion, the CEPEJ National Coordinator, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, represented by the Senior Programme Manager, Mr. Ideh Samuel, emphasized the benefits of tree planting around the neighbourhoods saying "trees are vital to human life".

"Trees provide oxygen which human beings need in our daily lives.  Without the trees, we cannot live", he stated.
