UN Chief Condemns Civilian Infrastructure Attacks Amid Escalating US-Iran Tensions

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, has strongly condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and across the Middle East, warning that such actions are unacceptable as military tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, on Friday, Guterres expressed deep concern over the worsening conflict and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further deterioration of the security situation.

The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned by the continuing military escalation between Iran and the United States of America," Haq told reporters.

Guterres specifically decried reported strikes on civilian facilities, stressing that attacks on non-military infrastructure violate international humanitarian principles.

 "He's particularly concerned about attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and across the region. Such attacks are unacceptable," Haq stated.

Iran has accused the United States of striking civilian infrastructure, including bridges and transportation hubs, during recent air operations. However, Washington has not officially confirmed the allegations or acknowledged targeting civilian facilities.

The UN's intervention comes amid growing international concern over renewed military exchanges between Washington and Tehran, raising fears of a wider regional conflict with significant humanitarian consequences.

The global body has continued to call for de-escalation, dialogue, and adherence to international law to prevent further loss of civilian lives and damage to critical infrastructure.
