MAMMY MARKET EVICTION: CDHR Urges Oborevwori to Establish Relief Camps for Displaced Residents in Uvwie, Delta

By Ezekiel Kagbala

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State Branch, has called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently establish relief camps and provide essential materials for residents and traders displaced by the ongoing demolition exercise at Mammy Market in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.

Reports from the area indicate that traders and other occupants are scrambling to evacuate their belongings as the demolition exercise gets underway, triggering confusion, panic and heightened tension.

The situation is reportedly tense, with affected persons rushing to salvage their properties amid the ongoing exercise, raising concerns about possible losses, theft and the immediate welfare of displaced residents.

The CDHR has urged the state government to provide emergency shelter, food, clean water, medical care and other essential relief materials to prevent further hardship among affected families.

The human rights organisation also called for urgent measures to protect vulnerable residents, safeguard their belongings and prevent the situation from escalating into a humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile, further details on the scope of the demolition and the Nigerian Army’s official explanation are still awaited.

The CDHR stressed that the government must act swiftly to ensure that affected residents are not abandoned without shelter or basic necessities during and after the demolition exercise.
