NAF PLANE CRASH: Hero Pilot Dies Saving Igbokoda Community

IGBOKODA — Residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, have hailed the pilot of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft that crashed into a deep swamp on October 5, 2026, saying his final manoeuvre may have saved the community from a greater catastrophe.

The aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, was reportedly carrying 32 people, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew members, on a flight from Benin to Lagos when it crashed. Residents said the pilot struggled to steer the aircraft away from the town before it plunged into the swamp, about 200 metres from the community.

Residents described the pilot as a hero, believing that his actions prevented the aircraft from crashing into populated areas and potentially causing more casualties.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who visited the crash site, said eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud sound suggesting possible engine failure before the aircraft went down. He described the scene as gruesome, with body parts, clothing, military jackets and aircraft fragments scattered across the water.

Seven days after the crash, the main wreckage remained submerged in the swamp despite rescue and recovery efforts by naval divers and local residents. Authorities deployed amphibious excavators and side-scan sonar equipment to locate and recover the aircraft.

The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the flight data recorder, popularly known as the black box, and the cockpit voice recorder had yet to be recovered, leaving critical questions about the cause of the crash unanswered.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, ordered a high-level investigation involving military and civilian aviation safety experts, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau and retired senior officers. He urged Nigerians to avoid speculation while investigators worked to establish what happened.

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, said there were no survivors, while the difficult swamp terrain continued to hamper recovery operations.

Meanwhile, reports of aviation fuel leaking into the surrounding water have raised concerns about possible environmental pollution, adding another challenge to the recovery operation.

For Igbokoda residents, the tragedy represents both devastating loss and a possible catastrophe narrowly avoided. While 32 lives were lost, many believe the pilot's final effort to steer the aircraft away from the town may have prevented an even greater disaster.
