Nigeria's Crude Oil Output Hits Six-Year High, Exceeds OPEC Quota Amid Middle East Tensions

Nigeria's crude oil production has climbed to its highest level in six years, reaching an average of 1.56 million barrels per day (bpd) in June 2026, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The latest figures show that Nigeria not only recorded its strongest crude production since April 2020 but also exceeded its OPEC+ production quota of 1.5 million bpd by producing 104 percent of its assigned target.

The NUPRC attributed the improved performance to sustained operational stability across producing assets, improved crude evacuation, and the absence of major pipeline outages or sabotage incidents during the period under review.

Including condensates, Nigeria's total oil production rose to 1.735 million bpd, marking the fourth consecutive month of production growth. Peak combined crude oil and condensate production reached 1.89 million bpd in June, underscoring the country's capacity to achieve the long-standing target of 2 million barrels per day in the near future.

The production milestone comes at a time of renewed geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, where escalating tensions involving Iran have heightened concerns over possible disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor.

Analysts believe Nigeria is well-positioned to benefit from stronger global demand and higher crude prices as international buyers seek alternative sources of supply amid the uncertainty.

The country's recent gains have been linked to intensified efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to curb crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta—challenges that had previously kept Nigeria below its OPEC quota for several years.

Looking ahead, Nigerian authorities are targeting an immediate increase of 100,000 bpd in crude production to capitalize on potential supply gaps in the global market. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has also reaffirmed its ambition to raise national crude oil production to 2 million bpd by 2027.

The latest production figures signal growing confidence in Nigeria's upstream petroleum sector and reinforce the country's strategic importance in maintaining stability in the global oil market amid rising geopolitical risks.
