The political storm that once tore Rivers State apart may be giving way to a new alliance, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday hosted Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at his Port Harcourt residence in a dramatic show of reconciliation.

The high-profile meeting, the first between the two political heavyweights since Fubara announced that he would not seek re-election in 2027, is being seen as a major signal that the bitter political battle between the former governor and his successor may finally be over.

Wike arrived for the meeting with the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, and the Chairman of the Rainbow Coalition reconciliation committee, Magnus Abe.

Fubara was accompanied by former APC Deputy National Chairman, Sam Jaja.

The meeting came amid intensified efforts to consolidate the political truce reached after months of bitter confrontation that plunged Rivers State into one of the most serious political crises in its recent history.

The once-close relationship between Wike and Fubara collapsed shortly after the latter assumed office in 2023, triggering a fierce struggle for political control of the state.

The confrontation spilled into the Rivers State House of Assembly, with lawmakers loyal to Wike initiating impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

The crisis subsequently escalated into a wider political emergency, culminating in President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a six-month state of emergency in the state.

But months later, the political script has dramatically changed.

Wike recently declared that his political disagreement with Fubara was over, maintaining that the governor had agreed to return to the political family that backed his emergence as governor in 2023.

That declaration opened the door for a structured reconciliation process, with the Rainbow Coalition setting up a committee led by Abe to engage Fubara and his supporters.

Fubara has since aligned himself with the coalition and endorsed Chinda as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election.

Sunday’s meeting therefore assumes considerable political significance, coming at a time when the battle for control of Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections is gathering momentum.

Beyond reconciliation, the renewed relationship between Wike and Fubara could fundamentally alter the state’s political calculations, particularly if their camps succeed in sustaining the emerging alliance.

For a state that witnessed months of bitter political warfare between the two camps, Sunday’s closed-door engagement represented a striking turnaround—from impeachment threats and political confrontation to handshakes, negotiations and a possible common front.

With 2027 fast approaching, the question now is whether the new alliance can survive the competing interests and ambitions that traditionally accompany Rivers State politics.

For now, Wike and Fubara appear to have chosen reconciliation over confrontation and the political consequences could be far-reaching.
