Udu Road Worsens Again: Endless Gridlock, Deep Potholes Leave Commuters Stranded

UDU, Delta State — August 7, 2026: What should have been a routine journey for thousands of motorists and commuters along the Udu Road and Ovwian axis in Udu Local Government Area turned into hours of frustration as worsening road conditions triggered severe traffic gridlock, exposing the deteriorating state of one of Delta State's busiest economic corridors.

A visit by FocalPoint Reports on Thursday, August 6, revealed that years of infrastructure neglect, expanding potholes, failed drainage systems, and waterlogged sections have reduced significant portions of the road to muddy traps, making movement slow, dangerous, and unpredictable.

The situation has become increasingly unbearable for commercial drivers, private motorists, traders, workers, and residents who depend on the road daily for business and transportation.

At one of the worst sections observed, vehicles struggled to pass through a stretch overwhelmed by thick clay and stagnant water. Several cars became trapped as their tyres sank into the soft mud, while others developed mechanical faults after repeated attempts to navigate the damaged surface. Some vehicles were pushed by sympathizers and fellow road users in an effort to free them from the muddy depression.

A blue saloon car is seen cautiously attempting to manoeuvre through a deeply rutted and muddy section of the road while a commercial tricycle squeezes through the narrow passage. Pools of dirty water cover the uneven surface, with visible tyre tracks carved into the thick clay, illustrating the daily ordeal motorists endure. Behind the vehicles, traffic stretches into the distance under cloudy skies, reflecting the prolonged congestion caused by the road's deplorable condition.

Commercial transport operators lamented that journeys which ordinarily take a few minutes now consume several hours, resulting in increased fuel costs, vehicle damage, lost business opportunities, and reduced daily earnings.

Residents argue that the persistent deterioration raises serious questions over the status of the proposed dualisation or reconstruction of the road from Express Junction to ECN Junction. Many said the present condition does not reflect expectations for a major gateway serving thousands of residents and businesses in the area.

Concerned citizens have therefore called on Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to urgently intervene by accelerating reconstruction efforts while providing temporary remedial measures and alternative traffic routes to ease congestion.

Stakeholders also stressed that any lasting solution must go beyond patching potholes to include comprehensive drainage construction, proper road foundation, and complete rehabilitation capable of withstanding heavy traffic and seasonal flooding.

For many residents of Udu, the worsening state of the road is no longer merely an inconvenience but an economic and safety challenge affecting livelihoods, emergency response, and the free movement of people and goods.

Until decisive action is taken, commuters fear that Udu Road will continue to symbolize the growing infrastructure challenges confronting one of Delta State's most strategic transport corridors.
